Data assimilation, encompassing methods such as the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF), variational approaches, and emerging techniques in machine learning and AI, is applied in diverse domains such as atmospheric, oceanic, hydrologic, biomedical, biologic, and petroleum reservoir systems. By providing a platform for thought-provoking presentations and meaningful discussions, the workshop seeks to foster collaboration among practitioners, researchers, and students. Together, we will showcase cutting-edge research findings, exchange practical insights, and collectively explore uncharted territories by identifying crucial challenges in data assimilation methods, its applications, and optimal decisions. - Physical attendance only (no virtual participation or videoconferencing).
- There is a small pool in the hotel. There is also the fjord for daring swimmers, as well as a sauna and an outdoor hot tub.
- There are excellent hiking opportunities in the area, and the program includes a guided hike.
- While the workshop organisers will not be able to assist with the planning, experienced hikers may want to consider the day-long trek from Myrdal (train stop) to Ulvik, possibly extended by the scenic bike ride or train to/from Flåm.
Travel to the conference venue (bus + ferry) from Bergen (and return by bus) is included with the conference fee. Pick-up/drop-off location: TBD.

- Presentations (talks and posters) submission deadline: Friday Feb 12, CET 17:00.
- Non-presenting attendees welcome. They can likely sign up later, subject to availability.
- The conference fee of NOK 17’000 is the same for presenters and non-presenters alike and covers the meals and a hotel room for 3 nights (ref. schedule). Participants will receive a link to pay the fee and thereby confirm their registration if selected for admission by the scientific committee: G. Evensen, D. Oliver, P. N. Raanes (NORCE) Y. - Participants that must apply for a visa should note this in the “additional information” field of the form and submit as early as possible.
- To submit both a talk and a poster (on separate topic or to continue discussions) please submit the form twice. This is encouraged (no additional charges).
- One may bring up to 1 adult companion and 1 child, sharing hotel room of the attendee. If desired, please indicate so in the “additional information” field. Their final registration (including transportation and meals) will be confirmed upon paying the conference fee. The additional charge is NOK 5500 for an adult, 4000 for a child (4-12 years old), 0 for smaller children.
- Travel support (NOK 7000 in the form of reduced registration fee) for students from outside Europe may be applied for by replying to the submission confirmation email by a statement of financial need (max 300 words) and attaching a proof of PhD student status. The available funds will be disbursed based on need and relevance to the workshop.

- Posters are on display throughout the workshop, and should be presented during both poster sessions. Size: A0 upright (portrait) or A1 (any orientation).
- Talks should have a run time of 22 min, to be followed by 8 min. Q&A.
- Suggested notations
- The Hackathon will be an experiment: a communal and LLM-powered study of reproducibility in the DA literature.

Background
The EnKF is a data assimilation method that was co-invented and has been continuously developed by researchers at NORCE and NERSC. Over the last three decades, ensemble-based and variational data assimilation methods, including EnKF, have become highly effective and widely adopted approaches for integrating data into large-scale models. These advances have made profound impacts across disciplines and industries. The field continues to evolve, with new algorithms, workflows and applications.

Purpose
While the fundamental concepts of data assimilation methods are simple, practical implementations often demand problem-specific modifications for success. The EnKF-WS aims to bridge the expertise of specialists from various fields to investigate the foundations and interconnections of ensemble, variational, and hybrid data assimilation methods, as well as new approaches in machine learning and AI, that have demonstrated effectiveness in diverse environments. Beyond practical applications, the gathering also facilitates the exchange of innovative research ideas, methods, algorithms, and workflows with the potential to further advance the performance and scope of data assimilation techniques.
History
In 2006, the inaugural EnKF workshop was held in Voss, Norway, marking the beginning of an annual tradition. Throughout the years, the EnKF workshop has consistently attracted participants from a wide range of scientific disciplines. The cross-pollination of ideas and the exchange of scientific advancements have fostered vibrant discussions and elevated the workshop’s scientific calibre to a high level. As a result, the annual international EnKF workshop has now established itself as a paramount event within the data assimilation community.
